A day to remeber for Girls football in RCT!
The next Jess Fishlock or Kayleigh Green may well emerge from the schools of Rhondda Cynon Taff. The RCT Schools FA U13s Girls County squad claimed the accolade of Welsh County Champions following a thrilling win against Caerphilly Schools at Penybont Football Club on Saturday, June 9th 2018. The final finished 5-0 to the RCT girls, who after edging in front with an early goal, never looked back and managed the big occasion and warm conditions with impressive professionalism.
The cup final victory has put the icing on the cake of an imperious season for the girls. Having played 16 county games throughout the season, the squad has won 14, drawn 1 and lost just once. In the process, they have scored a staggering 103 goals – this in an incredible record at such a high level of football and underlines the deserving nature of the girls’ crown of Welsh Champions.
The squad is selected through a trial process where all Secondary Schools are asked to nominate players to attend county trials. Ten of RCT’s Secondary Schools are represented in the squad, reaching into all the three districts of Rhondda, Cynon and Taff. The triumph is one that that the whole of RCT should celebrate and recognise the outstanding achievement of the children representing the county.
RCT Schools FA Chairman, Ceri Jones, who also coaches the squad along with Gareth Williams and Mathew Maidment, underlined the work that has been undertaken behind the scenes to achieve the success, “The whole association is hugely proud of the girls – they have all been super committed to training through the long dark winter nights. To finish the season as Welsh Champions was thoroughly deserved for the girls, and also for the parents and Coaches who support the children throughout the season.
Whilst we focus on the development of the children as footballers, the association also performs a fundamental role in creating an environment through football to develop the social, interpersonal and leadership skills of our players. They are all clearly fantastic footballers, that much is obvious, but to see them progress as a squad with new friendships formed is more rewarding for me. We have girls in the squad from different schools, backgrounds and communities but they have gelled so well as a unit, we couldn’t have achieved the success without the fantastic attitude that these girls have demonstrated, they have been a huge credit to their schools and their parents.”
The RCT U15s Girls squad have also had a strong season. The girls lost narrowly to Cardiff & Vale Schools 3-0 in their respective Welsh Cup Final, but the contest was close much of the game.
The Welsh Schools Football Association (WSFA) County girls pathway is growing in strength and numbers and all schools will shortly have the opportunity to nominate players for the 18/19 squad trials.
